Overview
Many people have often wondered if the iPad can be used as a journal. In the short time that has been available application developers have found ways to make the iPad into a great journaling tool. In this guide discover how the iPad can be used as a journal and what the best tools are for this and what some of the not so great tools are.

Essential App

my memoir
364907316

myMemoir is the essential app for journaling on your iPad. What makes myMemoir unique? Well, it is the ability to have endless number of journals with endless customization options and font options. It has the ability to password protect each of those journals with different passwords and has the ability to have journals without passwords so the security options of this app are fantastic. The application also has the ability to import images into your journal entries. One of the core features of my memoir and what really makes this an essential app is its ability to export as an e-book, using the ePub format. Each of the journal entries becomes a chapter marking in an ePub document that can easily be used in iBooks or even sold on the iBooks store. The e-book even includes a table of context for quick navigation through the book which makes it a very professional looking e-book. The one downside of this feature is each e-book will have a small image of the myMemoir icon on the title page cover and that is something that is not as professional and wish they would get rid of that picture eventually. Another export feature is the ability to export it as a PDF. So what makes myMemoir the essential app for journaling on your iPad? It's the complete customization of this app, you're able to add endless numbers of journals with different security settings, the great export options, the beautiful interface; it is a complete package for writing on your iPad in a personal way that is not available anywhere else except through this application.

Notable Apps
My Own Diary HD
364631945

For those looking for a diary application that only includes one diary this is a great app to have. The application features many powerful export features such as regular PDF or even a secure PDF (standard text is another option). The application also includes four different font types to make the journal as personal as possible. One very nice feature is the ability to export it via mail so you do not have to deal with the iTunes file sharing system which many of the applications force you to do. Another nice feature is the ability to place three different kinds of stamps on each page a good day stamp, a bad day stamp, or a normal date stamp. These are great to have as they can indicate to you what kind of day it was. The application is fairly featured but misses some key things such as including audio notes, image notes or even the simple ability of multiple diaries. If these features that are missing don't bother you this is a great application to have as a provides a very personal experience, a great user interface, and some nice features not included anywhere else such as the day stamp feature.

MaxJournal
364907090

A very powerful journaling application for the iPad is MaxJournal. The application is laid out much like a calendar except highly tuned for journaling. The application features many highly powerful tools such as time stamping, the ability to search within your journaling entries through text or keyword. The application features some nice abilities when composing to add photographs or even tags to your entries to make finding them easy. The export options of this application are very advanced. You're able to export via PDF or text. You are also each able to e-mail the export or send it via the filesharing system. You are able to send it via a single file or multiple files. The final option when exporting is to include images or simply leave those out. The writing experience itself is very personal, the entire screen comes up as your canvas for writing. It is very easy to find days you wrote because in each month it will highlight days that you have written in blue. Customization options in this application include choosing your font type from amongst many different font options. You're also able to choose the font size. Finally, this app brings the ability to password protect your journal which is essential to any journaling application. This app is a very notable app but not essential. The missing features include not being able to have multiple journals at the same time and the lack of visual customization options as are available in myMemoir. It is however a great option for those looking for a professional looking journaling application for the iPad.

Chronicle
371886793

Chronicle is a fantastic application. The writing experience within this application is very nice. It features a timestamp with the date and time that you wrote your entry, it features the ability to attach photographs, stamp the entry with many more options than the other programs; such as angry mail, star, half star, zero star, dice, music, electricity, and many more. It also features the ability to change your font size, choose between nine different fonts, and change how dark your text is between four different grey or black options. It also features privacy settings just as the other applications do. You can choose to have a five character password or you choose to have it unlocked. The innovative features of this application are held within its export options. First off we have the ability to export to Google docs which is the first time in any journaling application for the iPad. The second unique export option is the ability to export your journal as a website. Finally you have the option to simply send an e-mail with the text of all of your entries. Chronicle is a very well put together application and comes highly recommended. The features we would have wished it would've included are multiple journals and exporting as an e-book.

Decent

iJournaler
364611751

This application is a decent app but misses many key points to make a great journaling application for the iPad. The biggest down sides of this app are the export options currently available. You are able to only export as a zip file for use to reload within this application. This is not a good thing to have because you are now stuck to using this application for the rest of your journaling life. You are not able to move between applications. Some of the nice features of this application include a beautiful user interface which makes you feel like you are actually inside a journal when writing. This journal also features password security which is essential to a journaling app that may contain private information. The other negative is you only have one journal to work with. The application although very beautiful is way too bare-bones to be recommended at this time. It is our hope that this application will grow and become more and more powerful because it is such a beautiful application.

Diary
374048815

Diary is yet another very simple application for the iPad. Its features include password protection, a table of contents, various font options, and the ability to search. This app is a decent app but it is missing way too many features to become a notable or essential application. It features no export options of any kind. It is a great start but has a long way to go.
